One of the reasons why I love living in Knoxville is because of my dear friends Justin Paulk and his partner in crime Virginia Adams. They have it all, Justin is a meticulous, incomparably talented, nationally acclaimed concrete artist, and Virginia is a brilliant force of nature, philanthropist, art curator and socialite. When it comes to the parties they throw at their shop slash Soho style gallery, it is certain that you will have an out of Knoxville experience.
It all started with the mini gun.
“The mini gun was a big speculative project that Paulk + Co worked on and on for months until it was completed. Once it was done, Justin said that it was so ‘fucking badass’ that it deserved a party.” Virginia said coyly. So they threw a party and The Steampunk Carnivale was born. This year, Justin and his expanding entourage of rogue artists, avante garde circus performers, cosplayers, revelers and gizmologists are gearing up for the 2nd Annual Steampunk Carnivale.
As one of the proud supporters of this event, I see the future of growth in Knoxville that is needed. Paulk + Co provides a foundation for building a community deeply rooted in the arts that will benefit Knoxville educationally, economically, and artistically.
The event, taking place June 7, 2014, will have extended hours from 12 pm until 10:00 pm due to the explosive success of last year’s festivities that left everyone seeing red, hungry for more artistic fury not likely seen in Knoxville.
This year, the time-bending expansion is inclusive of family centered activities. Kids ten years old and under receive free admission. Artisan demonstrations, steam-tech workshops, and vendors will provide a variety of educational sources on the retrofuturistic, industrial Victorian era culture of steampunk. The highlight of the afternoon will be Steampunk Storytime presented by Sundress Academy for the Arts, and a children’s costume contest at 3:00pm.
Steampunk Carnivale welcomes back Pecktec, the time traveling gentleman journalist as esteemed Master of Ceremonies. He will be joined by The Countess Cinnamon Cindilicious Cogsteam, The fiery Mistress of Ceremonies.
Throughout the day, a buzz of roaming artists will whet your appetite for the scintillating line-up of performers scheduled to be on the outdoor stage. The graceful dance works of Humaya Tribal Fusion, Ananda Dance Co., and Sandsation Dancers are just some of the unforgettable south-eastern talent that will grace the stage. Steampunk Carnivale also welcomes the gravity defying works of Biz’Cirque and Mountain Meridian Hoops.
The evening kicks off with an adult costume contest at 7:00PM. Vaudvillian-blues musical act Sidecar Symposium fronted by the sultry Lulu Skidoo will perform. The event is headlined by Hudson K who’s reputation for creating songs with a high repeat factor is catching on like wildfire. The evening ends on an engulfing note with a fire finale that will leave attendees burning for more.
The overwhelming community support has made this event possible. Steampunk Carnivale is sponsored by: Knox Makers, The MUSE of Knoxville, 106.1 The River, TEMPLE, Girls of the Con, The Artifice Club, The Anjana Network, and Green Earth Emporium.
The Steampunk Carnivale will be held June 7 at Paulk + Co., 510 Williams Street, Knoxville, TN 37917 from 12:00 pm until 10:00PM, 21+ after 10pm. Tickets are $10 at the door. There will be ample free parking available at the city parking lot under the bridge opposite the event.
